AXE FACTS: Designed by Blizzard to be the “ultimate competitive real-time strategy game”, Starcraft 2 will utilize the Havok physics engine, support DirectX 9/10 and simultaneously release for the Mac and PC platforms at an as-of-yet undetermined date. The game will see the return of the three races from the original title – Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. Each race will have numerous units (similar in number to the original Starcraft) that are being designed with more of an emphasis on environmental interaction. The development staff has stated that the multiplayer component is the key focus behind the project.

MY SLICE (The Axe Wielder): I think Starcraft is awesome…and I’ve never even played it. I’ve watched, in awe, as geeked out unit commanders morphed from average earth citizen to fearless and ruthless squad leaders right before my eyes during professional competitions. If there is ONE game that demonstrates what competitive gaming is all about, it’s gotta be Starcraft. That said, I respect the franchise and actually really look forward to seeing the enhancements the capable team at Blizzard are sure to implement. The game will be intense and provide the new official battleground for competitive gaming, but, for those of us who simply want something entertaining to grab command of at home…will it be fun?
